Technical Issue Hits Capital One: Thousands of Customers Affected

A technical issue with a third-party vendor has left thousands of Capital One customers unable to access their accounts online, sparking outrage on social media. The problem, which began on Thursday, has affected payment processing, deposits, and account services for the bank’s consumer, small business, and commercial clients.

According to Downdetector, a website that tracks outages, over 2,000 users reported issues with Capital One’s online banking services as of Thursday morning. The number of reports had decreased slightly by late afternoon, but customers were still experiencing difficulties accessing their accounts. Many took to social media to express their frustration, with some reporting that they were unable to pay bills or access their money.

The Cause of the Issue

Capital One has attributed the problem to a technical issue with FIS Global, a provider of financial technology services to major banks, including Capital One. FIS Global stated that a power outage at one of its data centers was the root cause of the issue. The company is working to restore affected applications and expects to complete most of the work by the end of the day.

Impact on Customers

The technical issue has caused significant inconvenience for Capital One customers, many of whom rely on online banking services to manage their finances. Some customers reported that they were unable to access their accounts, while others experienced difficulties with payment processing and deposits.

Response from Capital One

Capital One has apologized for the disruption and is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. The bank has released an official statement acknowledging the problem and assuring customers that it is doing everything in its power to restore services.

“We are experiencing a technical issue with a third-party vendor that is temporarily impacting some account services, deposits, and payment processing for portions of our consumer, small business, and commercial bank,” the statement read.

Similar Issues at Other Banks

The technical issue at Capital One comes just a day after Citibank acknowledged a problem affecting customers’ ability to access their accounts from mobile devices. While the mobile access issue appeared to have been resolved, Citi is still working to fix an apparent issue related to fraud alerts.

Earlier this month, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau sued Capital One, alleging that it misled customers about its savings-account offerings. Capital One has denied the allegations.

What Customers Can Do

If you are a Capital One customer affected by the technical issue, there are several steps you can take:

  • Check the bank’s website and social media accounts for updates on the status of the issue
  • Contact Capital One’s customer service department to report any issues or concerns
  • Consider visiting a local branch or ATM to access your account

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
